York wildlife control Tip of the Month:

What kind of damage do wild animals cause in an attic?
Attics are warm, safe, and provide the perfect living environment for many animal species, most commonly bats, birds, raccoons, rats, and squirrels. Sadly, these cute and fuzzy animals make terrible house guests and can cause a lot of damage to attics and the items stored in them.

Structural Damage

The Culprits: Raccoons, Rats, and Squirrels
Animals that have made your attic their home can cause a surprising amount of structural damage to your attic and home. The most obvious damage caused to attics are holes that have been made in the walls, usually through chewing or ripping parts of already weakened areas of wall, to use as an entrance and exit.
Squirrels and rats are also known to gnaw and chew wooden beams in attics and eaves, causing small to extensive damage. Rodents have constantly growing teeth that they need to wear down and the wooden beams in your attics and eaves is the perfect material to chew on.
If you live in a house built using bricks then you should occasionally inspect your walls for damage or holes. Species like squirrels are able to chew through mortar and weaken areas of brick wall to squeeze through to get into attics.

Electrical Wiring and Water Piping Damage
The Culprits: Raccoons, Rats, and Squirrels Damage to your electrical wiring and PVC water piping is common when animals have infested your attic. All damage caused by animals living in your attic is serious and a nuisance, but this is arguably the worst kind of damage as it creates a huge health and safety risk. Chewed and damaged wires can lead to alarms being set off, electrical outages, and in serious cases it can cause fires. Damage to water piping can cause leaks and even serious flooding.

Stains, Odors, and Disease from Animal Droppings
The Culprits: Bats, Birds, Raccoons, Rats, and Squirrels
Animal feces and urine are not only unpleasant and hard to clean, they also cause staining on your floors and walls, a foul odor that is difficult to remove even after cleaning your attic, and cause mold to grow on soiled and damp surfaces.
Bat feces (guano) is an even more serious problem. As well as staining damage, guano, in rare cases, can cause people to develop a lung disease called Histoplasmosis. This is because guano can sometimes contain a dangerous fungal spore that when inhaled can cause serious and sometimes deadly symptoms.

Damage to Insulation and Storage Items
The Culprits: Bats, Birds, Raccoons, Rats, and Squirrels
Raccoons, rats, and squirrels have been known to damage insulation by tearing it out to use as bedding for nests. Damage to insulation will cause your home’s heating and cooling systems to be less effective and could end up costing you a lot of money if gone unnoticed.
Attics are often used as a place to store an assortment of items which are at risk of being damaged by animals that are living in them. Animals are likely to urinate, tear apart items to use as bedding, or chew holes into furniture to make nests.

Grease and Oil Stains from Animal Fur

The Culprits: Bats and Rats
Bats and rodents have oily coats and will often leave behind oily or greasy stains on things they have squeezed or rubbed past. The grease on the fur of these species is actually not dirt, it’s oil that is produced by glands in their body to keep their fur conditioned and waterproof. Oil stains are persistent and can be difficult to clean, however, they can also indicate the entrance and exit site these animals are using to get into your attic. All of the species mentioned in this article are extremely determined and will almost always find a way to chew or climb their way into your attic. To prevent them from entering your attic and making it their home you will need to install some preventative measures. Discourage them from wanting to live in your attic by making it an unfriendly and unsuitable environment.
